2016-17 League Table Report

31/03/2017

And it's all over...
A very exciting finish to our league, with four rinks in with a chance of the title before the last game was completed. The "top" game was between Geoff and Bella, with Geoff needing a win or peel to secure top spot. Leading 4-2 after four ends, he was looking good but Bella struck back with a 3 in the fifth. In the sixth end Geoff managed a single to level the game, at which point Bella shook hands presumably accepting the peel as a fair result. This gave Geoff the one point required to take the title, and moved Bella up to second spot as Ed and David both lost. Congratulations to both rinks, in particular the winners - Geoff Barber, David Scott, Sheila Campbell and Hazel Steele. (Heather Gray subbed for Hazel in the last game).

In the other matches, Ed was well beaten by Alistair, who took a 5 in the second end. A good season from Ed, but Alistair's killer blow relegated him to fourth position. The other title contender, David Gray looked to be cruising at 4-0 up, but Peter Reynolds (subbing for skip Jim Nelson) had other ideas and fought back strongly to win 8-5.

Another surprise was Alan McKinlay's rink, skipped by regular third, Linda, as the secretary is in South Africa. A shrewd move in his part, as Linda, helped by Bill Aitken at third and their rink had a close game against Charlie, and by taking a two at the last, won by that margin. This catapulted them from 5th position to 3rd in the prize list.

And it has to be mentioned - Ronnie failed to mount much of a challenge against the fast improving Willie Scott, and remained in bottom spot. But his broad smile in the bar indicated he was not downhearted!

All in all a good season for Ayr and Alloway, although with the rinks reducing to ten from twelve, the banter seemed to be slightly lacking. Let's hope we can get back to twelve next season.
