Bowling Day

The sun shone at Prestwick Bowling Club which matched the warm welcome from Margaret and Maureen who were on hand to "keep us right" with the rules and tactics of the game. Not forgetting our own expert David Graham, a Seafield member and top notch curler who helped AACC teams achieve some successes.

Some of us mastered with ease the asymmetric shape of the bowl called the bias that makes it travel in a curve rather than a straight line. However a few bowls did encroach on others rinks often chased by the offending novice player.

Another surprise was the different bowl weights, either medium or heavy with the latter being preferred by professionals to deliver momentum enabling the bowl to maintain a truer line.

Winning seemed secondary except for the spouse of a player who became more determined not to be beaten and uttered little "off puts" to the opposition as the game progressed. But no "nigglers" (tactical nuisance) were present on the day.

We had great fun playing this gentile ancient game, no shouting, slipping, falling, tripping or sweeping. Just plain armature skill.

Just as the sun disappeared behind heavy rain clouds, we retired to the club house where we were greeted by a sumptuous delicious two course meal delivered to spotlessly set tables.
