Rozelle Curling Pond

Our curling club officially dates back to 1854, although it is thought the origins could be even earlier. Ken Gray completed research and published a booklet A Brief History of Ayr and Alloway Curling Club 1854-2010, which can be downloaded below. This was based on the booklet provided to members in 2004, as part of the 150th Celebrations.

The fabulous photo above, showing two gents playing on Rozelle, is in the booklet and the original may be in the club archives. It shows the curling rink with very few trees around, looking across to Ewenfield Road. The map below clearly shows the layout of the main curling pond with a smaller pond adjacent. This had a tarmac base and held very little water, making it quick to freeze. Both curling ponds were fed from the main Rozelle ponds, which are still the same shape and size today.
